Sedona With Kids

Bell Rock is the pick Heat is the main risk

Start with Bell Rock Pathway. It's the one famous Sedona trail the Forest Service actually rates easy and family-friendly โ€” wide, hard-surfaced, 185 feet of gain, restrooms at the lot, and you can turn back at any point.

Skip Cathedral Rock with young children. It's 1.1 miles, which sounds ideal, and it's rated strenuous with a hand-over-hand scramble and real exposure. The short distance is a trap.

The heat is the real constraint. Summer highs average 94โ€“97ยฐF with almost no shade on the red rock. With kids, that means dawn starts or nothing.

What works

Bell Rock Pathway โ€” the standout. Flat, wide, three lots so you'll get parking, restrooms at two of them, and dogs welcome on a leash. Kids can scramble on the lower slickrock at the base while adults keep an eye from the flat.

Chapel of the Holy Cross โ€” free, short, and genuinely impressive to children. Ten minutes and a view.

Oak Creek Vista โ€” free, restrooms, big view, and the vendor market gives kids something to look at that isn't another rock.

Airport Mesa at sunset โ€” a short walk from the car for the biggest view in Sedona. Hold hands near the edges; it's unfenced.

Slide Rock State Park โ€” the natural water slide is the classic Sedona-with-kids day, though the swim area is closed right now after the Pocket Fire. Check before building a day around it.

Crane Petroglyph โ€” over a thousand petroglyphs on one wall, and site hosts who are usually great with children. Friday to Monday only.

What to skip, and the rules that bite

Cathedral Rock โ€” strenuous, with a chute that requires hands and a head for exposure. Devil's Bridge โ€” closed right now anyway, but the unrailed arch with drops on both sides is not a young-children destination even when open.

Heat, seriously. NOAA normals put June, July and August highs at 94โ€“97ยฐF, and Sedona's trails are unshaded slickrock that radiates heat back at you. Arizona health guidance suggests limiting strenuous activity above 90ยฐF. With children the margin is smaller: be off the rock by 10am, carry more water than seems necessary, and treat a midday summer hike as off the table.

Parking rules don't bend for families. Cathedral Rock's lot is closed to private vehicles Thursday to Sunday โ€” the free shuttle is the only way in, and it's actually easier with kids than fighting for a space.

Age limits on tours โ€” neither the balloon operators nor the jeep operators publish minimum ages that we could find. Ask when booking rather than assuming.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best hike in Sedona for young kids?

Bell Rock Pathway. It's the Forest Service's own 'easy, family-friendly' rating โ€” wide, flat, 185 feet of gain, restrooms at the trailhead, and you can turn around whenever you need to.

Can kids hike Cathedral Rock?

It's not a good choice for young children. Despite being only 1.1 miles round trip, the Forest Service rates it strenuous, and it involves hand-over-hand scrambling on steep bald rock with real exposure.

Is Sedona too hot for kids in summer?

Midday, effectively yes. Average highs run 94โ€“97ยฐF June through August with almost no shade on the trails. Dawn starts work well; midday hiking doesn't.

Is Slide Rock open for swimming?

Not right now โ€” the Oak Creek swim area is closed through August 3, 2026 after the Pocket Fire, because of debris and flash-flood risk. The rest of the park is open.

Are there age limits for balloon or jeep tours?

None that the operators publish where we could find them. Ask the operator directly when booking.
