The Pocket Fire burned north and west of Sedona this summer. The resulting Forest Service closure order covers a large block of trails — Boynton Canyon among them — and runs through September 30, 2026 unless rescinded sooner.
By the Forest Service's most recent public update the fire itself was largely contained and its activity had subsided; the continuing concern on a burn scar is monsoon flash flooding, which is exactly the hazard a narrow box canyon like Boynton concentrates. That's why the closure persists after the flames are out, and it's a good reason to take it seriously rather than treat it as bureaucratic caution.

What it's like when it's open
Boynton is a deep, steep-walled box canyon on Sedona's west side, flanked by high red cliffs and, unusually among the four sites, real shade for much of its length. The Enchantment Resort sits inside the canyon mouth; the public trailhead and trail are separate from resort property.
The "vortex" most guides mean is not the full six-mile canyon hike. It's a short spur climbing to a rock overlook near the trailhead — a modest walk with a big view, which is why Boynton often appears on lists of easy vortex visits despite the official trail stats looking demanding. The Forest Service doesn't publish a distance for the spur specifically, so treat exact figures elsewhere as estimates.
The Forest Service's own description is notably careful, saying the trail "has developed a reputation as a site of a spiritual energy vortex" — describing the belief, not endorsing it.
A note on the cultural claims
Boynton Canyon is widely described in travel writing as sacred to the Yavapai-Apache people and the site of an origin story. That association is repeated almost universally online, but we were not able to trace it to a tribal or ethnographic primary source, so we're flagging it as commonly-stated rather than presenting it as verified.
We'd rather say that than repeat a cultural claim about a living community with more confidence than our sourcing supports. If you know the primary source, we'd genuinely like to hear about it.
