Cathedral Rock Vortex
Two things to know before you plan this one. First, the hike is short but genuinely hard: 1.1 miles round trip, 669 feet of gain, and the Forest Service rates it strenuous, describing it as "more of a rock climb than a hike." There's a chute section where you'll use your hands.
Second — and this is the one that ruins days — the trailhead parking lot is closed to private vehicles Thursday through Sunday, year-round, whenever the shuttle is running (7:00am–5:30pm). On those days the only legal way in is the free Sedona Shuttle Route 15. Monday through Wednesday you can drive up and park with a Red Rock Pass.
The trail itself is open — it's not in the current fire closure.

This is the single most consequential fact on this page, so here it is verbatim from the City of Sedona's own shuttle FAQ: "The parking lot(s) located at the Cathedral Rock Trailhead will be closed to the general public whenever the shuttle is operating and will reopen after the shuttles go out of service."
In practice: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 7:00am to 5:30pm, you cannot drive to this trailhead. The shuttle also expands to seven days a week during spring break and some holiday windows, which extends the restriction with it. Monday through Wednesday the lot is normal drive-up parking with a Red Rock Pass.
The shuttle is free, needs no reservation, and runs roughly every 15 minutes from the North SR-179 Park & Ride (1294 SR 179, 65 spaces). Shuttle riders are not charged a trailhead parking fee. Back O' Beyond Road is residential and enforced — it is not an overflow lot, and neither is Little Horse, which the City calls out by name.
The chute — the part that turns people around
About halfway up, the route hits a steep crack in the rock, roughly 45 degrees, with natural foot pockets worn into the sandstone. It's not technical climbing and it needs no gear, but it is hand-over-hand, and it is the point where a meaningful number of hikers decide they're done.
On busy days a queue forms in the chute itself. The convention is that people coming down yield to people going up, because downclimbing the pockets is the harder direction. If you're uneasy with exposure, this is the honest filter: the view from the saddle is spectacular and the way you get there involves being on steep bald rock with real drops beside you.
There's no shade on the exposed sections. In summer that compounds fast — Sedona heat rescues are a routine occurrence, and this trail's short distance lulls people into carrying too little water.
Where the vortex is, and the view from below
The vortex is generally associated with the saddle between the spires — the notch you reach at the top of the climb. There is no marker, no register, and no official designation.
If the scramble isn't for you, the classic view of Cathedral Rock — the one on every postcard, reflected in Oak Creek — is from Red Rock Crossing / Crescent Moon Ranch, on the other side of the water. No climbing at all. But note that Crescent Moon is a concessionaire site: it costs $15 per vehicle and your Red Rock Pass and America the Beautiful pass are not accepted there. That surprises people every single day.
